Saline Taster: Living Our Calling as Salt and Light

Tuesday, December 13th at 7 pm Central

Description: How do we live Jesus’ calling to be salt and light in the work we do as students, faculty, and nurses? Many of us find ourselves asking, "Am I allowed to provide spiritual care and support for my patients? How can I share my faith? Is it okay for me to pray with my patient if they ask for prayer?"

The purpose of the Saline Process is to equip Christian healthcare workers to be witnesses for Christ in their clinical settings. In this Saline Taster presentation, participants receive an overview of the principles and tools that can be applied in their interactions with patients and colleagues. After completing the Saline Process training, participants should be able to assess a patient’s attitude toward Christ and know how to respond appropriately, applying the ethical principles of permission, sensitivity, and respect. This biblically-based teaching emphasizes the role many individuals may play in a person’s journey to Christ as we live out our faith on a daily basis.

Objectives: At the end of the presentation, participants will be able to:

  • Reflect on what is involved in the Saline Process.
  • Explore the three phases of an individual's journey to faith.
  • Identify personal barriers to being an effective witness in our work environment.
  • Examine the barriers to faith our patients experience.
  • Discuss the ethical practices that guide our spiritual discussions with others.
  • Review eight tools that can be used in our workplaces as witnesses of our faith.

Presenter: Christy Secor, DNP, RN, CDWF serves as the national NCF Professional Ministries Director supporting professional nurse groups which provide strength, encouragement, and deeper connection with God and others among the groups' participants. Christy also brings her training as a Certified Daring Way™ facilitator, based on Dr. Brené Brown’s research, to incorporate courage-building, shame resilience, and uncovering the power of vulnerability in the conversations we have with each other. Christy has also completed the requirements as a Saline Process trainer providing insights on the ways we can become more effective faith-sharers and support integrated whole-person care.
